Commonwealth Workshop

For a number of years, COMSEC has provided technical assistance to various member countries in Creative and Cultural industries and some of the products from these industries utilize natural fibre (both plant and animal).

This year the world is celebrating International Year of Natural Fibre (Led by FAO),

Plant fibres include seed hairs, such as cotton; stem (or bast) fibres, such as flax and hemp; leaf fibres, such as sisal; and husk fibres, such as coconut.

Animal fibres include wool, hair and secretions, such as silk

Commonwealth intends to organize a Pan-Commonwealth workshop related to production and marketing of natural fibre products to:

  • (a) Foster and share innovative findings, trends, trade incentives and the promotion of global best practices with respect to processing, exporting and marketing;
  • (b)  Discuss critical issues facing the industry and identify solutions;
  • (c) Showcase the processes, products and players involved in the production of natural fibres;
  • (d)   Facilitate interaction, trade and agreements between entrepreneurs, buyers, processors, retailers, the media and other industries (e.g. fashion, tourism etc)
  • (e)    Bring together policy makers, designers, technology and investors to facilitate production of higher value goods and new market opportunities

The event, which will comprise workshops and an exhibition will take place either in India or London in June 2009
