November 6, 2008 New York City "Third Gender" in the Pacific: Art and Human Rights Shigeyuki Kihara, a visual and performance artist, curator and freelance fashion editor is in New York for the opening of her solo installation "Shigeyuki Kihara: Living Photographs" at The Metropolitan Museum of Art (on display Oct 7, 2008 - Feb 1, 2009 http://www.metmuseum.org/special/se_event.asp?OccurrenceId={9CB28274-DE20-4488-B3CD-B3A42DD6137B} ) and for the accompanying artist talk and solo performance of "Taualuga; the last dance." Shigeyuki, of Japanese and Samoan parentage, came to New Zealand in 1989 and is the recipient of the Emerging Pacific Artist Award from Creative New Zealand Arts Council in 2003. Her work is in numerous public collections including: Te Papa Tongarewa Museum of New Zealand , Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation (Sydney) and University of Cambridge Museum of Archeology & Anthropology (UK). In 2007, two of her works were purchased by The Metropolitan Museum. Shigeyuki is also actively involved in grass roots projects aiming to empower 'Third Gender' communities in the Pacific. http://www.shigeyukikihara.com Joy Liddicoat, LLB Hons is a Commissioner with the New Zealand Human Rights Commission. In 2006 Joy led the Commission's inquiry into the human rights of transgender people, the first time such an inquiry had been carried out by a national human rights institution. Joy has had a wide range of leadership roles in diverse communities in New Zealand , the Pacific and South Asia . A lawyer for over 20 years, Joy has her own law practice in New Zealand specialising in public law and works on issues of sexuality, gender and human rights. Joy has been on the Core Faculty of CREA's annual Institute for Rights, Activism and Development in South Asia since 2004.
