Call for artists: Q150 Shed

q150.jpg

This entertainment venue, modelled on the classic Australian shearing shed, will take the arts to the people of Queensland. By night, the venue will come alive with an array of music performances from Queensland's talented local artists. By day, schools, young people and community groups will gather as the venue transforms into a workshop and educational forum.

The touring path will cover city and country as the Shed is brought to life in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Augathella, Mt Isa, Cairns, Rockhampton and Cherbourg - to name a few.

Q150 Shed touring dates

Audition now for the Q150 Shed

Calling on all artists, performers, story tellers, musicians and bands to audition for the Q150 Shed, a unique entertainment venue touring Queensland in 2009.

To express your interest in the auditions being held during December 2008, artists must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) form by 5pm on Friday 21 November.

Q150 Shed FAQs

What type of act are you looking for?

At this stage we are not looking for a specific kind of act, though the limited production elements of the Q150 Shed lend the venue to high calibre music of most styles. Acoustic or low production/gear performance will be favoured. That said, high quality comedy, dance and variety performance may have its place. We are looking for self-contained acts that are ready to be performed, not for shows that we need to develop.

We are looking forward to seeing what comes out of the auditions, and to compiling programmes completely unique to the each region on the tour.

Should I tailor my act for the proposal?

When putting together your proposal, first consider the venue - a touring shed based on the Australian shearing shed - and what you might do that will be suitable. The reason that The Shed is on tour is to showcase Queensland artists and culture, so you may like to take this into account also.

Because the touring show is family-friendly and the venue's programme will be designed to attract a very diverse audience, your performance should be aimed at a family crowd made up of people from your locality. The late night shows may deviate from this.

When are the tours taking place?

The first tour (which is the tour referred to in the current release) will take place in June/early July, and visit:

  • Mt Isa
  • Cairns
  • Townsville
  • Mackay
  • Rockhampton
  • Maryborough
  • Caboolture

Calls for expressions of interest for the second tour, which will take place in November 2009, will go out in February. PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL ARTISTS ARE AUDITIONING TO PERFORM ONLY IN THEIR HOME TOWN SEASON

What is the programme set-up for the Q150 Shed?

The Q150 Shed will tour with one house show, and the rest of the programme content for each location will be drawn from local artists.

We anticipate a programme of up to, but certainly no more than 5 local artists per night. At this stage, there has been no decision regarding whether the same presentation will take place on each night of a local season.

I don't live in the town you're auditioning, but I'm close - am I eligible?

You are welcome to submit a proposal if you believe that you could reasonably be considered as a local to the area. It is a stretch, for example, for a Brisbane artist to submit to be considered as a local artist for the Caboolture tour, but in more remote areas this may be valid.

Are there age limits on artists?

While there are no age limits on performers, it is important to note that the majority of the local programme will take place after 8:30pm.

With that in mind, if you believe that the proposed programme item is suitable, please complete the EOI.

How will the workshop/daytime programme be created?

In most regions, the artists from the house show will conduct at least one workshop. The rest of the day programme will be created from the EOIs submitted by local artists.

If you can offer a workshop or a performance/presentation more suitable to a day programme, please note this on your EOI.

Can I be involved in the tour, though I am not an artist?

Yes. Q150 will shortly be seeking volunteers from the community who would like to be part of the local production team.

We will require assistance on everything from Front of House (ticketing, ushers) to Car Parking Attendants to promotion. Experience is not necessary - but enthusiasm, reliability and a genuine desire to be a part of the modern carnival certainly is.
